An Introduction to Voiceovers

Before starting our lessons in screenwriting, Kelly taught us about voiceover work. We learned about what it takes to do voiceover and animation. To be a voiceover actor the ability to change your voice in an instant is a necessity. Most voiceover work is associated with animation and most famously, Disney. Many celebrities have voiced some of the most famous Disney characters out there. Here are a couple of examples;

Dwayne Johnson voiced 'Maui' in Disney's 'Moana'                            The Rock's Husky Polynesian God from Disney's Moana Gets Mixed Reviews

These are just a few examples of famous voice over work in Disney. There are many more I could name, but I would be here all day! If you would like to look into anymore there is endless amounts of information about this on Google.

After giving us a little introduction to voiceovers and what it takes to make one, Kelly set us off with a task of trying to make our own voiceovers for well known animations. We got given Toy Story and in groups of five we had to come up with different voices for each character from the movie. We took a character each and had a little think about what we would like to do with each. I chose Woody as I felt he would be the most difficult character to find a new voice for and wanted to challenge myself. We used the new radio equipment which the college provided to the students in Film and TV and used this to record our voiceovers. The scene was one from Toy Story where Woody is giving a pep talk to each of the toys. It was hard to try and think of a different interpretation for Woody because he is quite obviously an American sheriff/ cowboy. I thought outside the box and decided to make him into a farmer-esque character from Yorkshire. This is obviously very different to his character but I though I'd give it a go because someone recently told me; "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take". Overall, I think  the risk payed off and I was quite pleased with how we worked as a team and our overall little skit.
Keanu Reeves is joining the cast of 'Toy Story 4', hopefully as ...
