Coronavirus. The most talked about topic of 2020. A Global pandemic which has shocked and devastated the whole globe.
The acting industry is a multi billion pound industry. For actors, the career has always been a vocation with financial instability. For amateur actors who are just starting off the months of March until June are the most vital of the year as producers are taking on thousands of actors to play in their films that will be premiered later in the year. On March 16th 2020, ticket sales were pitiful and plummeted drastically. Box offices cancelled release after release and cinemas around the world shut their doors for the coming months. The livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people were destroyed. Worry struck hose who worry about paying the bills and there is speculation to whether the film industry will ever recover. Global box offices dropped by billions of dollars and the Chinese film industry had lost US $2 billion by March 2020. Also, North America saw it's lowest box office weekend since 1998 between March 13th to the 15th.
However, when it comes to filming some countries such as Sweden and Denmark are a lot less strict. This, of course, is a controversial decision. industry guidelines in Nordic countries prevent the number of crew members on set, social distancing, online video casting and reduces craft services. When it comes to filming scenes that involve kissing, stimulated intercourse or other intimacy, there are no set guidelines. Variety reports; however that at-risk actors, such as older workers, are not recommended for filming at this time and crowd scenes are off the table for now.
On March 12th Broadway went dark, joining Hollywood in a whole-sale work stoppage in a bid to slow the spread of Covid-19. This has brought sadness to the whole of the industry and it breaks my heart to think that aspiring actors as well as professional are out of jobs and worrying about what's to come.
I hope that all works out and that people can get their lives back together after the coronavirus is contained.
