The Musicians Costumes: Production and Design

I have touched a little bit on the costume journey we went through on my rehearsal diary. When we assigned roles I got given costume which I was pleased with because costume is what makes or breaks a show.

We had already spoken a little bit about costume and everyone's vision for the show. I took everyone's thoughts into mind when planning costume.

Kelly also gave me some help when it came to costume as she has directed the show before. I was struggling with what people should wear when we perform Tchaikovsky's symphony number 4. I know that usually the women in an orchestra usually wear all different types of black dresses. I was aware of this but I didn't really want the school orchestra wearing anything too posh as they aren't too posh in my mind anyway. The men in an orchestra usually wear suits with shirts and posh trousers.

My final decision was to have the orchestra wearing short sleeved shirts and skirts and tights (if you're a girl) and trousers if you're a boy. Kelly suggested we wear black bow ties with these outfits. Then the Tchaikovsky section was sorted! We purchased a 5 pack of white shirts, and four 2 packs of white shirts. A few people didn't have a black skirt so we purchased a few of those as well.

There was then a bit of discussion as to what Rosie should wear. Everyone was talking about Rosie dressing the same as the orchestra. Then there was talk of her wearing a tail coat jacket. I didn't really like these suggestions as I wanted her to stand out from the rest of the orchestra yet still not look too professional. I came to the conclusion that Rosie should wear a long sleeved black dress (so that she was still modest) with a pair of black tights. Therefore, she was still put together.
In terms of costume for when the musicians first arrive I have told people to bring in all of the biggest wooly jumpers and coats, hats and scarves that they own. Basically just dress like they're in England during the winter! (but amplified of course)

In terms of costume for Alex me, Kate and Kelly done a lot of thinking. We decided to go with some 1970's esque dungarees with a Pinball Wizard top that I bought for the auditions underneath. We also decided for Alex to wear a little bandana in her hair like an old-fashioned cleaner. We were pretty certain what Alex needed to wear and now I'm just excited for the vision to be complete!
